FTW 295 - Ft. Wainwright Family Housing Replacement
This contract involved a turn-key environmental project encompassing consulting, remediation, and demolition services at Ft. Wainwright Alaska. The project required the removal of all hazardous materials from twelve, eight-plex buildings and associated utilidors where new mechanical installation was required. The design-build process allowed Satori to provide additions or deletions to specifications prior to authoring the Hazardous Materials Work Plan (HMWP) and the Site Safety and Health Plan (SSHP).
The project required removal of Regulated Asbestos Containing Materials (RACM), mercury thermostats/light tubes, radioactive smoke detectors, Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) ballasts, and drain-down of hydronic systems. Satori conducted permit-required Confined Space Entry into utilidor sections to abate, clean, and install hard barriers and provide clean areas for other trades and Directorate of Public Works (DPW). A secondary containment area was constructed to provide storage for hazardous material drums. Satori sampled, received, and reviewed analytical results prior to transferring hazardous materials to Fort Wainwright DPW.
Satori also conducted Photo Ionization Detector (PID) headspace screening during earthwork operations and provided a detailed summary report of sampling as part of a separate contract. Satori performed air monitoring for asbestos and lead during abatement and demolition. Demolition of the buildings included the concrete foundations, garages, and adjacent utilities. All asbestos removed from the buildings was double-wrapped or bagged and disposed of in the Fort Wainwright landfill.
This project was started in April of 2006 and completed June of 2006 and proved to be a multi-faceted endeavor. The scope of work included the removal of many different hazardous materials in the Class 1 Material category. For instance, within that category 5,600 Thermal System Insulation (TSI) elbows, 19,600 linear feet of pipe wrap, and 1,000 ft2 of storage tank wrap were removed. Satori also removed 800 gallons of glycol, 520 mercury thermostats, and 224 PCB ballasts.
